Overview

Most children struggle to articulate what they feel. When words fail them, emotions often manifest as silence, frustration, or anxiety. This workshop provides young learners with practical tools to process their inner world through the timeless crafts of poetry and songwriting. In four focused sessions, participants will discover how to channel feelings into creative expression - developing skills that serve them far beyond the classroom.

• Creating imagery through sensory language
• Developing rhythm and finding natural rhymes
• Selecting words that create impact

Day 2: Rhythm - The Heartbeat of Poetry

This session deepens technical understanding with syllable counting, stress patterns, and word placement. Students learn how to make their writing feel musical, and why rhythm is the foundation of every great song lyric.

Key Skills:
• Mastering syllable patterns and rhythm structures

• Working with stressed and unstressed beats

• Using alliteration and repetition effectively

• Placing strong words on strong beats

Day 3: Rhyme - Sound Connections

Students explore the full world of rhyme and learn how it combines with rhythm to create the building blocks of a song. By the end of the session, students will have written poems in three different rhyme schemes.

Key Skills:

  • Working with perfect, slant, and internal rhymes
  • Using three essential rhyme schemes
  • Combining rhythm and rhyme into musical writing
  • Beginning to think in song structure

Day 4: Write Your Song - Putting It All Together

  • Matching syllables to melody
  • Writing and performing an original song

A Note on Our Approach

This isn’t a course designed to create professional poets or songwriters (though it might). It’s designed to give young people a tool they can use whenever life gets complex, a way to process experiences, understand themselves better, and express what matters to them.
The technical skills we teach are simply vehicles for something more important: helping children discover that they have a voice worth expressing, and that their inner world has value.
Whether they continue with creative writing or not, the ability to articulate emotions and organize thoughts will serve them throughout their lives.
